Halloween

We had so much fun preparing for Halloween.

As usual we had our Green Halloween Fashion Show. This year we made robot vests. We cut holes for our heads in the gold or silver paper and then decorated them with more paper, bottle caps and tubes.

We modeled them in the Fashion Show on Thursday.

The following day was Friday, the day we were getting the holidays. We dressed up in our Halloween costumes. We looked fantastic!

We made skeletons using cotton buds and glue. It was tricky getting them to stick onto the paper. Here are some skeletons we made.

We played Halloween games in the class such as Pin the Wart on the Witch, Halloween Bingo, The Grape on the Flour, Halloween Headbandz and Halloween Dominoes.

We had great fun!

We had assembly that day where one child got pupil of the week and another child won the raffle for the School Walk.

We also handed out the attendance certificates for children who haven't missed a day yet of school. Well done to them all! Keep up the good work!

We also went on a Spooky Walk around Clondalkin! I think we scared everyone in the village!

Enjoy the mid-term everyone!

Autumn

We were learning all about autumn in October.

We went on an autumn walk.

We collected leaves and did leaf rubbings.

We painted tree trunks and then used the pointillism technique to paint the leaves.

We created 3D trees by folding paper a certain way and cutting it to make branches. We stuck on leaves we cut with paper.

We created an acrostic poem based on autumn. We wrote it out using our best handwriting. The poems are displayed inside and outside our classroom along with the pointillism autumn trees, the leaf rubbings and the 3D autumn trees.

Autumn is here again
Up in the trees leaves are red
The fruit is ready for harvest
Underground animals are preparing to sleep
Migrating birds fly south
Nights are longer now

Here are two of our Pupils of the Week from October.

We started DEAR in October.
Drop Everything And Read.

For maths week we took part in fun maths stations - Tangrams, a game on the IWB, 100 square puzzles and making pictures using 2D shapes.

The School Walk

On Friday the 30th of October we went on our school walk to Corkagh Park.

We had great fun in the park.

Useful websites to use at home

Here are some websites based on the letters and sounds.

The Jolly Phonics songs that help teach letter recognition and the sound the letters make.

This video has all the sounds spoken clearly twice and then used in a word.

This link shows the correct letter formation we use in school.

Exceptions:

h,i,l, m and n have kicks at the end.

f - we write f like this.

Start just under the top line, go back over the hump, straight down under the line a little bit, kick it back and cross it near the top.

k - we write k like this.

Start at the top, go straight down to the line, back up to the middle, give him a belly, a leg and a kick.

Good websites for phonics games:

Here are some websites based on the sight words the children learned in junior and senior infants.

Your child would have learned the pre-primer list in Junior Infants and the Primer list on Senior Infants. They will be learning the Grade 1 list this year in first class.

Gives a good understanding of Dolch words and has some activities and printables for practicing the Dolch words.

All About Me!

Our theme in September was myself.

We drew self-portraits.

First we drew realistic self-portraits that look just like us! We used wool as our hair.

Another week we drew Picasso style self portraits. Picasso was an artist who exaggerated shapes in people's faces. These self-portraits were so much fun to draw and colour!

We celebrated Lucky to be Me fortnight in September. We wrote about some of the things we are good at. We are marvellous and we make sure to tell ourselves that everyday.

We played literacy and numeracy activities in our groups.

Welcome to our Blog

We are the children in First Class Room 9 in Scoil Mhuire.

Keep an eye on our blog to see what we get up to this school year.

A big congratulations to our first three pupils of the week!
